Why can’t I sell on my own and save money on commission?


You can try! But here’s why you don’t want to:

  • Homes sold by a Realtor usually go for more than those for sale by owner (FSBO).
According to 2020 data compiled by NAR, the typical FSBO closed at $217,900, compared to $295,000 for agent-assisted sales. That’s a whopping $77,100 difference - 35% for that price range! This means most sellers who “saved” money on commission ended up with less in their pockets.
  • Potential buyers use it to negotiate: “You’re not paying a broker, so take the amount a broker charges off the price.” And just like that, they saved the commission, not you!
  • Selling a home is a lot of work. You need to:
✔️ Market the property ✔️ Show the house ✔️ Field calls about it ✔️ Negotiate on price ✔️ Set up appointments ✔️ Resolve problems relating to inspection, appraisal or title ...and that’s for easy sales! You don’t want to do all this on your own, and end up with less money for your efforts.
